2008/10/27--Go West Young Man

Submitted by uberpest on Mon, 2008-10-27 16:49.

Today I got to briefly meet a very cool Cowboy, Mr. John Wayne Haynes. He is traveling from his home in Michigan to New Mexico to visit his family. His is no ordinary road trip, however, as he is on horseback (2-year-old Misty, and Appaloosa). and is accompanied by his pack horse (Harley, 23, another Appaloosa) and dog, Sheila. I didn't get to talk to him very long, but heard about his stop from an online friend many states away. Her hometown is nearby and Mr. Haynes stopped to spend the weekend in my neighborhood.

Mr. Haynes is hoping to make it to NM to spend Easter with his family.

Unfortunately, the story about his stay near me isn't available online without a subscription, but I did find more info on him from other peoples' sites and blogs.

John Wayne stayed at our house too, in Franklin TN. It snowed so he stayed for about 3 days it was a great experience, he is really one of the kindest people and his horses are amazing. His dog had been bitten and injured so it rested a few days and was very sweet and loyal. He wished us a Merry Christmas , but i havent heard of him since and wondered what had happened, so i decided to look it up on the web, this makes me so happy that so many people have helped him and been so kind to him too.

My family and I met John Wayne Haynes at Watonga, OK today, March 7, 2009. Such a nice and unique man, someone that you would only read about or watch in a movie, never would you find a real cowboy adventurer like him in the real world! He left such an impact on my family and I, even though we only spoke with him a few minutes.... we have worried all day wondering how far he would have made it today, wondering which way he went, wondering if he's going to find a safe place to sleep tonight, etc.... we decided to check the internet to see if we could find out any information on him, and were so thrilled that he has impacted others as he has us! We were even trying to figure out a way to get a horse trailer and how to try and find him so that we could take him to New Mexico! but now, after reading that this is what he is WANTING to do, and it not being that he is just a man having bad luck or something, we can rest a little easier! John, if you ever read this, it was an honor to have met you! Best of luck and God Bless you!- Leigh Ann

We had the honor of meeting John Wayne Haynes and his traveling companions on Feb. 19th. He was in Jones,OK staying under a bridge. My husband and I spoke with him extending him an invitation to come and stay at our home/ranch a few miles down the road in Luther. He arrived the next day and spent several days with us during which time we hosted several gatherings where we sang and ate. John was a blessing to our entire family and many of our friends. To hear John play the guitar and sing was a true highlight for us all. He attended church with us on Sunday morning and afterwards he and my husband (Danny) reshoed the horses. Monday morning John and Danny headed out together to Arcadia,OK. After eating lunch in Arcadia they bid each other a farewell. John continued on his journey towards Guthrie,OK where he stayed several days then went on to Watonga. That's where he was staying when we spoke with him on Tues. March 3.He had ran into a slight problem with mud along the way when Misty became burried in it up to the saddle. He spent the day cleaning her and his saddle and then continued on down the road.We are looking forward to hearing from our friend along his journey and God willing seeing him again in Oklahoma this summer. God bless you! YOUR FRIENDS AT THE CIRCLE D-5

Cowboy John Wayne along with Harley, Misty, and Shelia are still on their journey to New Mexico. He arrived in Bardstown Ky on November 18th. My husband and I met him as it got dusky dark and we invited him to stay with us, where he enjoyed two nights stay in our warm horse trailer with his dog Sheila. We gave the horses a stall each, hay and sweet feed and watched over them as they rest. On the 19th he decided to shoe his horses both of which had lost a shoe along the way. As he reset their shoes we were appalled at the condition of the shoes, they were so thin and worn! I asked for a pair of shoes to keep as a souvenir and not only gave me the shoes but he signed them as well! I made soups for supper (a great way to show him the warmth of Kentucky!) As the temperature dropped our concerns increased and we asked him to stay another night, knowing they'd all enjoy the comfort of warm beds. He decided to stay and we were relieved. We couldn't help but feel concerned. Upon awakening on the 20th he woke up and began packing. As he prepared the horses for their journey, the horses became excited and Sheila was wagging her tail. As he tied Harley and mounted Misty we couldn't help but become emotional. It was so hard to tell him bye and prevent the tears from falling. It was a pleasure getting to meet a man with so much determination and be a part of the journey that means so much to him. He is traveling 31E towards Glascow and plans to pass through Tennessee. For anyone who may see him please help make him welcome and support him on his quest. A warm bed or food is greatly appreciated and it eases our minds to know that he is being cared for. He is a wonderful person and we hope that you welcome him as we did!

Mr. Haynes came through Senatobia Ms. 1-7-09.He was a very intresting man and it was so refreshing to see him and his lovely family of animals enjoying life in the fast paced world we live in today. I was able to get a few pictures that I would be happy to share with others. Would love to keep track of him and know that he arrives safely at his destination. I think he was going to cross the West Helena bridge 1-10-09. Hope he made it across ok. I know someone offered him a truck and horse trailer to get across but he wanted to do it on his own. If you hear any futher information on his journey please let me know. Thanks .

Savannah TN- My daughter and I were thrilled at our breif meeting with this real-live adventurer. He passed through our town on Saturday 12-27-08. I am sorry to say that we could not offer him accommodations. We did say a special prayer for him in church on Sunday morning.
